What is ROS?

airPHX units produce synthetic Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), which have a short half-life and oxidize molds, bacteria and viruses at the molecular level. The term "full-spectrum ROS" refers to the many forms ROS can take, including singlet oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and ozone.  For more information, click here.


Yes, airPHX | ENVIRONMENTAL has conducted testing to ensure that the ROS we produce really does clean the air. The EPA has tested ROS technology for safety purposes, and found it safe for humans under their GRAS standards (Under sections 201(s) and 409 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act).

Has ROS technology been tested?

The main focus of airPHX technology is the full production of ROS including atomic oxygen, superoxide, hydrogen peroxide and other species that are more reactive than ozone. Ozone is produced in tiny quantities as a byproduct of airPHX | ENVIRONMENTAL ROS production, and we use is as a tracer to regulate our machines. The amount of ozone produced is well below OSHA standards of safe operation exposure.

Is ROS like Ozone?

Yes, airPHX units can run continuously or on a timer, depending on customer and facility requirements.

Does airPHX | ENVIRONMENTAL operate continuously?

No, airPHX units are very energy efficient.  Our technology runs with the same power requirements as a 75-Watt light bulb and require minimal maintenance.

Is airPHX | ENVIRONMENTAL expensive to operate?
Why not use UV?

Ultra-Violet lighting effectively kills germs with direct line of sight to its radiation.  UV-C has limited effectiveness treating shadowed areas. airPHX | ENVIRONMENTAL treats the air in a room, so any exposed surface will be treated whether it has direct line of sight to the unit, or not.


UV-C light can also burn skin and retinas exposed to its radiation, so UV-C lights can only safely operate in rooms without people.  airPHX does not pose these threats, and can run safely in occupied rooms.

Don't air filters eliminate germs?

Air filters can catch some germs but typically do little or nothing to kill germs or stop them from reproducing.

Why not use Photocatalytic Oxidation?

Photocatalytic oxidation removes germs from the air as they pass through the reactor of a photocatalytic unit. airPHX® does this and more, killing microbes that pass through its core AND continuing to kill germs in the air and on surfaces in a treatment space.

Why not use Ozone?

Ozone has been shown to be corrosive to different types of equipment, and can cause irritation to skin and lungs at certain levels of exposure.  airPHX uses only a trace of ozone to regulate its levels of ROS, and is perfectly safe to run 24/7 in inhabited spaces.


airPHX units are mounted on a wall close to the ceiling in most applications. This utilizes airflow from the HVAC system to distribute the ROS throughout the environment. Mounting the technology within the environment allows for continuous treatment.

How are airPHX units installed?

Once installed, the technology will begin to eliminate bioburden and clean the environment as a whole. The first thing you will notice is the change in odor as the air becomes cleaner. Over time, you should notice a reduction in molds and bacteria, as well as longer shelf life for your products.
